Mold + The Good and Bad

Can we fall sick due to mold presence in our environment? Well, yes and no. Two people exposed to mold in a room will react differently. One may feel stuffy and start to get a headache, while the other may feel nothing at all. This depends on their level of sensitivity. We all know that there is differing sensitivities between healthy grown-ups compared to children, the elderly and the sick. The former obviously have robust immune system while the latter will react stronger to mold. There is a good side to mold. In France, a mold called Botrytis dehydrates rotten up grapes to produce a type of sweet wine that is of first class. And, of course, on the other hand there are bad molds which give us toxins and infection. Toxins : 'Toxigenic' produce toxins. People usually get infected via inhalation of mold dust or get exposed to them through touch. Fortunately, this toxin only harm the surface of our bodies, not affecting the internal part. In rare cases where mold grows in our bodies, that is infection. Infection : Happens to a person with weak immune system. For example, a tiny mold called Aspergillus is frequently found floating in the air. Most people inhale them into their lungs and never faced any problems. Others may not be as lucky. Another type of infection is the eye infection caused by the Fusarium species which can contaminate contact lens solution.
